Hiccups - Maintaining a Playful, Relaxed Approach
Sometimes, finding the right solutions takes time, and often, the best way to get there is by going back to the basics and making new mistakes along the way. These mistakes, however, lead to valuable learning, helping us refine our approach. It's important to keep an open mindset and avoid assuming one solution will work for every scenario. Horses and riders come with different personalities and conformation, so what works for one may not work for another.
As coaches and riders, we experience ups and downs. Some days everything flows beautifully, while others may feel more challenging. It's crucial to understand what makes your horse tick, what they enjoy, and which exercises they find difficult. Breaking these exercises into manageable, achievable steps helps build confidence and a relaxed working atmosphere.
By maintaining a playful, relaxed approach, these "hiccups" along the way become opportunities to refine your skills. Working on your seat, rein aids, and gliding from one exercise to the next while balancing and suppling your horse allows both you and your horse to enjoy the ride more. As a rider, you become a more natural load to carry, while your horse becomes more balanced and relaxed.
Ultimately, the success of the session is measured by how your horse feels about herself at the end.
